Course Overview
This course helps you transition into your BCIT programs by strengthening the listening and speaking skills needed for school and the workplace. You will participate in the same types of activities you will encounter in your future studies, such as group discussions, meetings, and interviews. Throughout the course, you will learn academic study strategies and how to communicate effectively with people from different cultures. You will practice expressing detailed ideas clearly while adjusting your tone and style for different audiences. The course also focuses on identifying key information in lectures and presentations. By the end of the term, you will improve your professional vocabulary and use advanced grammar accurately in your speech. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Courses includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3-5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.

- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of lively, complex conversations, discussions, and arguments, including speakers' viewpoints and attitudes
- Demonstrate understanding of the essential aspects of lectures, talks, and reports and other forms of complex technical academic presentations
- Communicate complex technical academic ideas and concepts clearly and precisely, distinguishing between those that are similar to each other
- Give a clear, well-structured presentation or argument, highlighting significant points and relevant supporting detail. Respond to interruptions and follow-up questions quickly and without difficulty
- Organize a discussion to decide a course of action with a partner or group, reporting on what others have said, summarizing, elaborating, and weighing multiple points of view
- Carry out an effective, fluent interview of a person in his/her target field of study/work, handling spontaneous questions, following up and exploring interesting replies
- Identify differences in sociocultural traditions or styles of communication, critically reflect on them, and adjust own communication accordingly
