Course Overview
This course helps you improve the reading, writing, and teamwork skills needed to succeed at BCIT and in the workplace. You will practice analyzing different texts to understand their style and purpose while learning to write clear, organized sentences, technical paragraphs, and professional emails. Throughout the term, you will also apply basic research skills and expand your use of vocabulary and grammar at the low-intermediate level. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Course includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3- 5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.
Prerequisite(s)
- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the content and relevance of news items, articles, and reports on a wide range of technical academic topics in order to decide whether the texts have the information needed to complete a task or are worthy of further study
- Demonstrate understanding of articles and reports of up to 850 words on modern-day problems in which writers share particular viewpoints
- Research a topic by reading simple technical and academic texts
- Write an essay or report of up to 300 words which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various options
- Write a short, precise, descriptive report of up to 300 words to promote a product
- Synthesize information and arguments from a number of sources
- Demonstrate understanding of informal and formal emails and messages related to school or work
- Respond to informal and formal emails and messages, related to school or work, clearly responding to the sender's points and arguments
- Identify and reflect on similarities and differences in cultural behaviours and discuss their significance
