Overview
The Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM) apprenticeship program requires time spent on the job and in-school training. A Diesel Engine Mechanic trainee must complete a two-year program including workplace and in-school hours of training as follows:
- Technical Training: 2 levels, 540 hours
Registration in the following levels of training at BCIT:- Level 1, 2 Heavy Mechanical Trades (HMT)
Note: Registration in this trade will be at SkilledTradesBC only. Apprentices complete the HMT levels at BCIT.
- Level 1, 2 Heavy Mechanical Trades (HMT)
- Work based training: 3,000 hours
After completion of training, a passing grade on the interprovincial exam will result in the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Qualification (Diesel Engine Mechanic) and a Certificate of Apprenticeship (BC).

Heavy Mechanical Trades Common Core
Heavy Mechanical Trades Apprenticeship (HMT) Levels 1, 2 and 3 are common core for the following programs:
- Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM): Levels 1, 2
- Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET): Level 1, 2, 3
- Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM): Level 1, 2, 3
- Transport Trailer Technician (TTT): Level 1
