Course Details

Provides a basic understanding of the major factors in managing a warehouse and distribution system. Introduces the concepts and applications for the effective management and control of distribution channel, warehouse, and transportation management functions and processes. Includes channel network design, distribution inventory management, warehousing, materials handling functions, and transportation management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Define the concept and functions of operations management in the manufacturing and distribution environment.
  • Describe the principles and objectives of managing distribution and logistics.
  • Identify the steps required to build successful supply chains that optimize organizational resources and satisfy the customer.
  • Appraise the role of inventory management in the organization including: classes of inventory, purpose and function of inventory, basic ordering techniques, lot size rules, order point concepts, the role of safety stock, and managing inventory performance.
  • Evaluate the use of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) logic to manage supply chain replenishment.
  • Critique warehouse functions including: identifying types of warehouses, developing warehouse strategies, warehouse management process, trends in modern warehousing, and designing the warehouse network.
  • Identify appropriate packaging and material handling including: the receiving process, material handling equipment, packaging design, warehouse automation, and warehouse management systems.
  • Evaluate modes of transportation to optimize business needs including: types of transportation, the transportation process, issues confronting transportation, and the use of logistics service providers.
