Introduces leadership commitment, open communication, and legal accountability as core concepts that form the basis for effective safety programs. Also explores the wide variety of functions within the OH&S field and the required resources for the safety generalist.

  2. This section of OCHS 1000 is an *** ONLINE *** Distance Education course. Internet access is required. To be successful, plan to spend 6-8 hours per week on your studies, starting Week 1. Tutor support is available by e-mail (or by phone, if pre-arranged). Upon registration, expect to receive a confirmation e-mail entitled “OCHS 1000 - Spring Term - Course Information from BCIT”. Ensure you have an active e-mail address on file with BCIT so you don't miss receiving this important e-mail. COURSE MATERIALS / BOOKSTORE: NO print course materials are required from the Bookstore for this ONLINE course. ACCESS: Available the morning of April 8 (the first day of the term). Login via The Learning Hub at: https://learn.bcit.ca. SPONSORED STUDENTS: Detailed information is available on the BCIT website. This “Proposed Program” will assist both sponsor and sponsored student with overall course planning and costs. Contact with the Program Head should be made at least 4 weeks prior to term start. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the OHS field and the role of the OHS practitioner.
  • Summarizes the history of OHS and describes key lessons learned from the early pioneers in the field.
  • Outline the basic principles of OHS.
  • Identify the founding principles of OHS legislation and outline the similarities and differences between jurisdictions.
  • Describe the key components of a safety program.
  • Describe the relationship between a successful safety program, effective leadership and communication, and a strong commitment to safety.
  • Provides examples of ethical dilemmas and potential resolutions in the OHS field.
  • List and describe several resources available to OHS practitioners.
  • Describe how a safety system differs from a safety program and explain why the OHS practitioner needs to be concerned with.
