MINE 1150 - Gravel Pit/Quarry Manager Training Course

Course Details

This course is designed to cover the skills required to manage a gravel pit or quarry mine in British Columbia. The course content is consistent with the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia (“The Code”). The Code will be gained through the course content and learning activities. General and specific occupational health and safety issues and best management practices will be reviewed and studied. Buildings, machinery and equipment commonly involved in gravel pit or quarry operations will be described, especially with relation to recognition of potential safety concerns and mitigation of hazards. Pit design plans will be studied and reviewed along with the range of operational procedures that take place in pits. The use of explosives will be considered, especially as this relates to the approved personnel required in the presence of blasting. The code requirements relating to reclamation and the closure of pits and quarries will be reviewed and standards as well as best management practices will be studied.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of a pit manager according to the effective use of the HSRC.
  • Explain the jurisdictional boundaries as they apply to value added aggregate products (asphalt, concrete and winter abrasive) and compliance with appropriate WorkSafe regulations.
  • Explain how to apply the HSRC to specific surface mining situations and the general rules pertaining to site operation including employer safety obligations, employee rights, OHS programs and accident/dangerous occurrence investigations.
  • Outline the various occupational health and safety requirements associated with pit operations including personnel safety.
  • Apply the HSRC to the use of buildings and operation of both stationary and mobile equipment.
  • Explain how electrical power systems and equipment grounding are pertinent to gravel pit and quarry operations.
  • Apply the rules pertinent to Surface Mines including mine plans, notifications, material excavation and equipment/haulage vehicle operation to given mining operation scenarios.
  • Describe general blasting requirements as they pertain to surface quarry operations.
  • Describe how pit operations are coordinated to facilitate pit/quarry reclamation and permanent closure.
