English Part-time Studies Course

To support you and your education, BCIT is adapting applied learning in formats appropriate to the unfolding global situation. All PTS classes are being delivered in an online format unless you are notified otherwise.

Course Details

This course introduces students to the principles of university-level writing and critical reading. Academic writing focuses on the study and application of the principles of university-level discourse, with particular emphasis on exposition and persuasion. Students will read and analyze essays, and write their own compositions. In several language workshops, students will also learn fundamental strategies for developing an effective prose style.

C+ in Grade 12 English.

Students should expect to be available for virtual class meetings during the specified day and times listed for this course. *(A)* PREREQUISITE: Department approval may be granted only if you have met the prerequisite requirement of C+ in Grade 12 English (or equivalent) from a Canadian High School. *(B)* EQUIVALENCIES: Current BCIT students may also be eligible based on past post-secondary courses. Students who obtained their education in other countries must provide an IELTS document with a minimum score of 7.5 in Writing and 7.0 in Reading. *(C)* EMAIL your proof of Grade 12 English (or equivalent) to lscott@bcit.ca. You must indicate in your email that you are requesting approval for the ENGL 1177 course and provide your BCIT student number. All approval is on a first-come, first-served basis. *(D)* FINAL EXAMS: Your instructor will provide further information regarding format and date of all exams.
