COMP 1516 - Programming Fundamentals with Python

Computer Systems Part-time Studies Course

School of Computing and Academic Studies

To support you and your education, BCIT is adapting applied learning in formats appropriate to the unfolding global situation. Spring and Summer PTS classes are being delivered in an online format unless you are notified otherwise.

Course Details

This hands-on introductory course will replace COMP 1409 as of September 2020. Students with no prior programming experience are introduced to fundamental programming concepts and the basics of using Python. COMP 1516 is a blended BYOD course, participants must provide their own Windows 10 dual core laptop with a minimum of 8GB RAM to participate in this course. Please note: BCIT does not provide technical support for student's hardware or operating systems. Attendance is required in class for 3 hours per week plus there is mandatory participation via the BCIT Learning Hub online activities. Students can also expect significant homework of 7-10 hours per week outside of class making the total time commitment 13+ hours per week for some students. Participants design, implement, test, and debug simple programs that incorporate: variables, expressions, assignments, I/O, conditional and iterative control constructs, functions, and parameter passing. Topics include: Data structures, data modelling, programming constructs, arrays, strings, sets and maps. Labs and exercises focus on writing code for projects, assignments, and activities. By the end of this course successful participants will have the experience to design, implement, test, debug simple programs. COMP 1516 is equivalent to ACIT 1515 in the CIT Diploma. Successful students will be prepared to move on to ACIT 2525 in CIT and to COMP 1451 in ASD_CSC to explore object-oriented programming with Java.

Prerequisite(s)

COMP 1002 or equivalent knowledge of using a Windows 10 PC for file management.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze and explain the behavior of simple programs.
  • Create simple algorithms for solving simple problems.
  • Choose the appropriate data structure for modeling a given problem.
  • Choose appropriate conditional and iteration constructs for a given programming task.
  • Apply the techniques of decomposition to break a program into smaller pieces.
  • Refactor a program by identifying opportunities to apply procedural abstraction.
  • Write programs that use primitive data types, variables, expressions, and command line I/O.
  • Write programs that use conditional and iterative control structures, functions, and parameter passing.
  • Write programs that use each of the following data structures: arrays, strings, sets, and maps.
  • Write programs using the standard libraries available with a chosen programming language.
  • Write programs that use file I/O to provide persistence across multiple executions.
  • Compare and contrast object-oriented programming with the procedural approach to programming.
  • Design and implement a class.
  • Apply a variety of strategies to the testing and debugging of simple programs.
  • Conduct a personal code review on a program component.
  • Contribute to a small-team code walkthrough.
