Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first-qualified basis as long as space remains.
- English language proficiency: Category 3 – English Studies 12 (50%) or equivalent
- Post-secondary education: one of the following:
- BCIT Diploma in Marine Engineering or
- An equivalent minimum of 60 credits of post-secondary education in Marine Engineering from a recognized institution
- Students who do not satisfy the post-secondary education requirement but who have the Fourth-Class Motor Marine Engineering CoC and work experience may be considered for admission into the program on a case-by-case basis.
- Professional certification: STCW Fourth-Class Motor Marine Engineering CoC
- Work experience: a minimum of two months of sea time as an engineer officer of the watch (ACES report or a letter from Transport Canada as proof)
Recommended for success
Complete all courses successfully in order to be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Marine Engineering and Transport Canada Engineering Officer Education and Training Management level certificate.

Candidates who have not completed the Marine Engineering Diploma program at BCIT or any other Transport Canada-approved institution would be required to produce a Second-Class Marine Engineering CoC, as approved by Transport Canada.
Transfer of credits may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Program Details
Program length
34 weeks (8 months, full-time).
Grading
A minimum passing grade of 60% is required in each course.
Accreditation
Upon successful completion of the Advanced Diploma, students will receive a Transport Canada training certificate, Engineering Officer Education and Training program at the Management level (EOET-M), which will grant students the exemptions for the academic subjects of the First-Class Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Certificate of Competency (CoC). Upon obtaining the necessary sea time as watchkeeping officers, students can write the appropriate STCW First-Class Engineering General & Motor examinations and take the oral exam to obtain the First-Class Motor Marine Engineer CoC, which is recognized internationally.

Job opportunities
Upon successfully obtaining Class 1 Marine Engineering CoC, candidates are eligible to work as Chief Engineers or First/Second Engineers on board ships. Additionally, they could be placed in management level jobs in the marine industry.
Apply for graduation
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.
Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.
All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
