This course explores the practice of engineering and the role of engineers in society. Topics include professional associations, ethics, equity, design and development, standards, and intellectual property.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define the discipline of engineering. [8]
- Discuss the origin and history of professional engineering in Canada. [8]
- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of engineers, now and in the future. [8,9]
- Appreciate the role of professional engineering associations and their guidelines. [8]
- Describe the scientific method, and the design and development processes in engineering. [4]
- Appreciate environmental stewardship and sustainability in the practice of engineering. [9]
- Discuss the ethical responsibilities of professional engineers. [10]
- Appreciate equity in the workplace including respect, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion. [10]
- Discuss the different workplaces that engineers work in. [8]
- Explain the role of standards in engineering. [4]
- Describe the different types of intellectual property. [1]
- Communicate technical concepts more effectively. [7]
- Identify the graduate attributes prescribed by the CEAB and describe their role in the Quality Assurance/Continual Improvement process.[12]
