Course Overview
The students in this course will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills for patient care in an interprofessional environment, learning about, from, and with other health professional learners. Students will be introduced to health and safety measures, learn how to complete a variety of basic healthcare procedures, and develop competency in the use of equipment commonly used in various healthcare settings. This course will provide the knowledge and skills to effectively support patients during various clinical skills. Theory is supported with supervised laboratory activities designed to give students opportunities to apply critical thinking and manual skills to a variety of patient care situations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe one's own role and the contributions of other health care team members on an interprofessional team.
- Communicate respectfully with clients and health care professionals in collaborative decision-making as part of an interprofessional team.
- Maintain and adhere to policies related to client information, privacy and confidentiality.
- Perform patient care skills, with supervision, in a manner that ensures safety and promotes comfort.
- Perform client assessments to determine appropriate interventions for diverse patients with various health concerns and in various health care contexts.
- Employ proper body mechanics and safely demonstrate methods to move and transport clients in various scenarios and settings.
- Perform routine practices and additional isolation precautions for infection prevention and control.
- Employ medical and surgical asepsis skills and techniques in various health care contexts.
- Use and ensure proper and safe function of patient assistive devices and medical equipment.
- Describe safety guidelines, common indications and scope of practice related to care of patient accessory equipment (e.g. IV, tubes and drains).
- Recognize unsafe conditions in the health care setting.
- Explain the required interventions when working with individuals who are violent or have the potential to be violent.
- Respond to various client scenarios within the limits of ones own professional scope of practice.
- Utilize effective written/verbal communication/documentation in various clinical settings including the transfer of care.
- Demonstrate proper client interventions during a medical emergency.
- Identify the healthcare professional's scope of practice consistent with current health standards in various healthcare contexts.
