Course details

This course introduces students to the principles of university-level writing and critical reading. Academic writing focuses on the study and application of the principles of university-level discourse, with particular emphasis on exposition and persuasion. Students will read and analyze essays, and write their own compositions. In several language workshops, students will also learn fundamental strategies for developing an effective prose style.

  3. *(A)* PREREQUISITE: Department approval may be granted only if you have met the prerequisite requirement of C+ in Grade 12 English (or equivalent) from a Canadian High School. *(B)* EQUIVALENCIES: Students who obtained their education in other countries must provide an IELTS document with a minimum score of 7.5 in Writing and 7.0 in Reading. *(C)* EMAIL your proof of Grade 12 English (or equivalent) to echienchu@bcit.ca. You must indicate in your email that you are requesting approval for the ENGL 1177 course and provide your BCIT student number. All approval is on a first-come, first-served basis. *(D)* This is NOT a SELF-PACED course. There will be specific timelines for assignments and exams. Course content, kind and quality of assignments and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. You will have discussions and assignments to complete each week (although you do NOT have to be online at a particular time or day). *(E)* FINAL EXAMS: Final exams will be held IN-PERSON on the Burnaby campus in the last week of the course. If you live outside the Lower Mainland area you will be required to have an approved proctor administer the exam. You are directly responsible for any invigilation fees and related costs.
