Course Overview
In this course, you will improve your listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary skills at the low-intermediate level to help you succeed in BCIT programs and the modern workplace. Tasks include listening to and discussing lectures and media recordings as well as presenting on technical and academic topics. You will collaborate on tasks to prepare for the teamwork required in BCIT programs and at work. It’s recommended that learners bring their own devices to every class (laptop/earphones). Weekly requirements: Courses includes two hours of online asynchronous class time. Prepare to spend 3-5 hours on homework studying, or assignments.
Prerequisite(s)
- Submit results of an approved language assessment, course(s), or credential(s). These results will decide your EPAS level. Please check the EPAS placement webpage for the language assessments or courses that are accepted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the main reasons for and against an argument, an idea, or a decision in a clear discussion on a straightforward technical academic topic
- Demonstrate understanding of a story, anecdote, or experience, containing significant sociocultural references, in extended informal work interactions
- Demonstrate understanding of complex informational structure or lines of argument within a clearly spoken lecture on a familiar topic
- Demonstrate understanding of informational and argumentative content in audiovisual material on topics of personal and familiar professional interest
- Take notes during clear and well-structured lectures or talks followed by the student's oral explanation or summary
- Deliver a 4-minute speech or presentation to communicate detailed information
- Deliver a 4-minute speech or presentation on a technical academic topic that gives the advantages and disadvantages of various options and recommends one
- Give a clear, prepared presentation of over 4 minutes on a technical academic topic using a variety of organizational types: structuring information effectively for the audience, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view, and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options
- Recognize that, in intercultural encounters, what one normally understands in a particular situation is not necessarily understood by others in the same way
- Work together on a simple practical problem or challenge, speculating about reasons, causes, effects, consequences, and weighing solutions or explanations
