Course Overview
Introduces the hierarchy of workplace hazard controls- engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment. Examines in detail workplace sanitation and personal facilities, safety through design, lighting and ventilation systems, materials handling, basic electrical safety, lockout and de-energization, personal protective equipment, lift trucks and fall protection. Explains how to successfully eliminate or reduce the risks associated with a variety of work processes.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Explain the concept of safety through design.
- Explain the benefits of safety through design.
- Demonstrate and ability to integrate safety into the design process.
- Outline general considerations in designing for safety and the significant codes and standards involved.
- State the safety factors to be considered in selecting a facility site.
- Use lighting and colour to enhance safety in the workplace.
- Describe how building maintenance is used to promote worker health and safety.
- Develop an effective PPE program.
- Describe the types of PPE typically used in the workplace and the regulations and standards that govern the design and use of PPE.
- Discuss the importance of effective industrial sanitation to enhance worker health and safety.
- Describe the regulatory requirements for personnel facilities in a workplace.
- Define common electrical energy terms.
- Discuss typical electrical injuries and their causes.
- Describe safe practices for using, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.
- Describe and teach safety measures for manual materials handling.
- Describe current standards and regulations regarding automated systems and processes.
- Define common lighting terminology.
- Demonstrate the use of basic photometers for evaluation of lighting systems.
- Define common industrial ventilation terminology.
- Demonstrate the use of common ventilation system evaluation instruments and techniques.
