Course Overview
POWR 2203 focusses on the processes and systems used in various types of power plants. The course continues from Power Plant Theory 1. Topics covered include pumps and air compressors, refrigeration, engines such as steam and gas turbines as well as internal combustion engines, and all components of heating boilers such as heating systems, fittings and burners. Students will consider both the set up and the operation of different heating systems.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Identify the basic types of pumps and compressors.
- Compare the application, design, maintenance and operation of different pumps and compressors.
- Describe mechanical refrigeration systems, components, maintenance and operation.
- Explain the procedure for operating the various types of heat engines and prime movers.
- Describe how low pressure steam functions within hot water heating systems.
- Describe the process of oil and gas burning, relative to boiler combustion systems and equipment.
- Recognize how low pressure steam and hot water system basic fittings and components contribute to the operation of a heating system.
- Identify the primary jobs involved in basic boiler maintenance.
