Ocean Navigation Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

The course provides students with the thorough knowledge of content, applications and intent of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea 1972 along with the Canadian Modification 1983; knowledge of the content, intent and application of the principles to be observed in keeping a safe navigational watch.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • Define the main terminology used in the Collision regulations.
  • Identify lights and shapes as specified in the Collision regulations for vessels.
  • Identify sound signaling for clear and restricted visibility situations.
  • Interpret steering and sailing rules.
  • State the various types of signals prescribed to indicate distress and need of assistance.
  • Explain the basic principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch, watch at anchor, and watch in port.
  • Write Standing orders for deck officers.
  • State the contents and applications of part 2 of the Marine Personnel Regulations.
  • State the contents, application and intent of STCW Code section A-VIII/2.
  • State the contents and applications of the Canadian Annual Notices to Mariners.
