Course Details

​In an information-based society, understanding data management is vital. The backbone of the Internet, Cloud Computing, and Business Intelligence, relational database management systems and data management provide the key to utilizing business information to create a competitive advantage. This course provides an introduction to relational database management systems, data modeling, and artificial intelligence. The student will use a relational database management system to create data models and build data applications. An introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning tools and models will also be included.

  1. This is a hybrid course with 6 classes conducted with internet delivery format and 6 classes on the BCIT Burnaby campus in a computer lab classroom. Classroom lab sessions are used to present the course topics and help the students with their hands-on activities. Internet online Q&A discussion forums are used to review and comprehend class topics. Midterm and Final exams will be held during lab sessions. Students are expected to be familiar with basic computer skills as covered in BSYS 1001 or an equivalent course. Students must submit an e-mail address when registering for the course. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain when and why a database should be created.
  • Construct a database using a relational database management system.
  • Develop tables and define table relationships.
  • Explain and illustrate the data modeling process using normalization.
  • Prepare single-table and multiple-table queries using advanced criteria.
  • Design input and output interfaces for your data application.
  • Describe the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
  • Compare various prediction models such as regression and classification.
  • Carry out ML experiments using dataset preparation , training, and testing modules​​.
