Course Details

In an information-based society, understanding data management is vital. The backbone of the Internet, Cloud Computing, Business Intelligence, and relational database management systems provide the key to utilizing business information to create a competitive advantage. This course provides an introduction to relational database management systems, data modeling, and the use of computer software to meet reporting and decision support needs within an organization. The student will use a relational database management system to create data tables, build table relationships, develop and modify custom forms, generate reports, and perform queries, while taking measures to ensure data validity, efficiency, and integrity. Subject to time available, additional topics will be included.

  1. This is a hybrid course with 6 classes conducted with internet delivery format and 6 classes on the BCIT Burnaby campus in a computer lab classroom. Classroom lab sessions are used to present the course topics and help the students with their hands-on activities. Internet online Q&A discussion forums are used to review and comprehend class topics. Midterm and Final exams will be held during lab sessions. Students are expected to be familiar with basic computer skills as covered in BSYS 1001 or an equivalent course. Students must submit an e-mail address when registering for the course. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain when and why a database should be created.
  • Create a database using a relational database management system.
  • Build tables and define table relationships.
  • Explain and illustrate the data modeling process using normalization.
  • Prepare single-table and multiple-table queries using advanced criteria.
  • Create custom forms and reports.
  • Utilize form and report tools and wizards.
  • Outline the process of database project management.
  • Describe the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
