Building Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

BCIT is planning for a substantial return to on-campus activity for the Winter 2022 term as informed by BC Provincial Health Officer guidelines. Refer to each course listing for details.

Course Details

Examines Part 9 of the 2018 B.C. Building Code as it applies to multi-unit residential and small commercial and industrial buildings. Covers plan checking and inspection techniques. Prepares students to deal with issues relating to Part 9 of the B.C. Building Code. Some duplication of material covered in BLDC 1500. Students must bring the B.C. Building Code (hardcopy) to the first class.

  1. Internet delivery format.
  2. ***This is not a self-paced course. There will be specific time lines for assignments and exams.*** A computer with speakers is required for this course. You must also have an e-mail address and access to a computer capable of downloading basic documents. Students will participate in weekly "Blackboard-Collaborate" sessions, scheduled 7:00pm - 8:30pm PST each Tuesday for the 12 weeks of the course. ALL FINAL EXAMS MUST BE WRITTEN DURING THE LAST WEEK OF THE COURSE ON DESIGNATED DATES AND TIMES. This course is offered in conjunction with the Building Officials' Association of B.C. Successful completion of this course qualifies students to write the BOABC exams for Level 2. The Province of BC has prescribed the BOABC Level 2 exams as the minimum qualification to work as a Level 2 Building Official. Please note that employers may require additional education or work experience for building official positions. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Check plans of buildings for compliance with the regulations in the BC Building Code, at an elementary level.
  • Inspect small, single or multi unit buildings relative to compliance with thr regulations in the BC Building Code.
  • Deal with question relating to Building Code requirements small, single or multi unit buildings.
  • Have a basic understanding of acceptable materials, systems, and methods used in construction.
