Overview
About this program
The Applied Mass Timber Engineering (AMTE) Microcredential is an applied online training program co-developed by BCIT and Aspect Structural Engineers, designed to upskill structural engineers in the design of mass timber structures.
The program equips practicing engineers and design professionals with the technical competencies needed to design gravity and lateral mass timber structural systems, develop advanced connection details, and apply real-world knowledge of fabrication, installation, and constructability. Courses are delivered fully online and are self-paced, making the program accessible to learners across British Columbia and Canada.
The curriculum is built around an overarching exemplar project that threads through all four courses, exposing students to the broader design process as it unfolds in practice. Competencies are aligned with the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) 2020 and relevant CSA standards. An optional 5-day in-person experiential learning course, TMBR 3550 – Advanced Mass Timber Construction for Engineers, is available to students who have successfully completed all four courses. This badged course is a separate offering and is not required to earn the microcredential.
Who it’s for
This microcredential is suited for structural engineers seeking to upskill, engineers-in-training who have recently entered the workforce, and new hires at mass timber design firms looking for a practical onboarding and training program.
