Course details

This course provides an overview of the contemporary Canadian business environment. The political, legal, regulatory and trading environment in which firms operate will be examined. Students will explore the operation of industries in the global economy and assess challenges and opportunities presented by environmental factors.

  3. Class will NOT be held March 14 (BCIT Spring Break). The exams will be held during class time IN PERSON at the Burnaby Campus in the classrooms listed above. THIS IS A DEGREE LEVEL COURSE FOR THE BACHELOR OF ACCOUNTING PROGRAM. This class will be held virtually, with the exception of mandatory in-person exams. This is a synchronous course, so students must be available to attend remotely through Zoom at the scheduled class times. Students must have a webcam and microphone. Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate potential sources of competitive intelligence.
  • Select ethical approaches to gathering and using competitive intelligence.
  • Interpret data and information relating to an organization and its business activities.
  • Assess impact of various components of the Canadian and global business environments using PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental) analysis.
  • Evaluate the level of competition in an industry.
  • Conclude whether an organization’s corporate social responsibility programs are appropriate and effective.
  • Assess the business climate and culture of Canada’s major trading partners.
  • Assess the impact of international trade agreements on an industry.
  • Plan a response to the opportunities and threats presented by the business environment.
  • Propose implementation plans for strategic and operational initiatives.
