Course details
Perinatal Clinical 2 builds on the competencies developed during NSPN 7300. Through the provision of care to low-risk childbearing women during the intrapartum and postpartum periods, the learner transitions from requiring supervision to independence. Learners may also be introduced to the care of women experiencing perinatal health challenges. This four ¬week clinical course takes place in a hospital setting. In addition to the five key areas of practice outlined in NSPN 7300 – Perinatal Clinical 1, there is an additional emphasis on clinical decision making using a Situated Clinical Decision Making Framework (SCDMF). A clinical site preceptor will facilitate this course. Registered Nurses (RNs) with more than six months of full time experience working with childbearing women in an acute perinatal setting may be able to challenge this course with approval of the program head.

This clinical course is available by application only. Clinical application due dates are as follows: Spring Term Feb 1, Fall Term June 1, Winter Term Oct 1. Please find the clinical application package on the BCIT Learning Hub in your NSPN 7200 course under Module 1. If you do not have access to this, please contact the Program Assistant at elaine_innes@bcit.ca and request a clinical application package. Learners are recommended to complete NSPN 7250 within the previous 6 months of the clinical start date. If the learner completed this course over six months, they must complete either an FHS refresher workshop or a Fundamental FHS course before entering clinical. Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Consistently perform a comprehensive and systematic assessment of a childbearing woman, fetus, and neonate in the acute perinatal setting independently.
- Consistently demonstrate the ability to interpret assessment data, recognize variance data, identify signs/symptoms of perinatal health challenges, and determine patient care priorities independently.
- Consistently articulate reasoning and rationale for nursing interventions, clinical judgment, and decision-making independently.
- Identify clinical situations where increased surveillance is required (e.g. atypical tracings, evidence of altered maternal health status, perinatal health challenges) under supervision of preceptor.
- Identify urgent/emergent situations and initiate the appropriate response independently.
- Work in partnership with patients and families to integrate specialty specific theory in the provision of safe, competent perinatal nursing care independently.
- Consistently demonstrate reflective practice by analyzing the care provided, being open to feedback, and incorporating feedback into practice.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with childbearing women, newborns, their families, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Articulate all relevant data in a systematic, comprehensive, and time sensitive manner through all verbal and written communication independently.
- Consistently demonstrate professionalism by participating in self-evaluation, acknowledging strengths/areas for development, seeking assistance as needed, utilizing existing resources, and being accountable for learning and practice.
- Provide individualized labour support including psychosocial care, comfort measures, information/advice, and advocacy to low-risk labouring women independently.
- Demonstrate care practices that promote, protect, and support normal birth (freedom of movement, step-wise approach to pain management, non-directed pushing) independently.
- Provide infant feeding information related but not limited to, benefits of breastfeeding, skin to skin contact, position/latch, frequency/duration, common breastfeeding challenges, and hospital and community resources to childbearing women and their families independently.
