Course Overview
This microcredential badged course supports internationally educated nurses (IENs) in transitioning to professional nursing practice in British Columbia, Canada. This course emphasizes the foundational knowledge needed to thrive as an RN in Canada, and provides a broad overview of the regulation of nursing practice in Canada, with a focus on the role and mandate of the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Key topics include professional standards, practice standards, and the scope of practice for registered nurses in BC. The course explores ethics and equity-oriented care, including topics such as gender diversity and inclusiveness, trauma- and violence-informed care, and the perspectives and factors that impact the health of Indigenous and other equity-deserving populations. Virtual clinical experiences help learners refine the knowledge and skills needed to deliver patient-centered care that respects dignity, fosters health, and minimizes harm for individuals facing mental health challenges and substance use disorders. Learners are encouraged to repeat the virtual clinicals multiple times within the course. As well, depending on each learner's unique style of learning, course study time may vary. Through course content and experiential learning, learners develop a professional development plan aligned with BCCNM's annual requirements to support their transition to practice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- explain the role of the Canadian nursing profession as a self-regulating body governed by provincial and territorial legislation
- summarize the standards of the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and their application to registered nursing practice
- describe the ethical standards required by registered nurses in BC
- identify the professional and ethical responsibilities in advocating for patient safety, fairness, and the equitable distribution of healthcare resources within the scope of nursing practice
- examine the origins and ongoing health inequities faced by Indigenous, and other equity deserving populations in Canada, and evaluate their influence on nursing practice
- reflect on personal biases and implement strategies to reduce the impact of positional power, personal values, and beliefs on patient care, fostering equitable health outcomes for all.
- deliver patient-centered care that respects dignity, promotes health, and reduces harm for individuals with mental health challenges and substance use disorders
- identify individual competence within the BCCNM professional standards and scope of practice to ensure professional accountability
- develop a personal plan for transitioning to nursing practice in Canada by integrating knowledge of both BCCNM professional standards and scope of practice standards

This course is eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC future skills grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant/. Students will register for the course themselves, and then apply for the StrongerBC future skills grant to cover payment (if eligible). The Winter 2026 StrongerBC future skills grant (FSG) will only be eligible for students continuing their FSG-eligible program that they started in Fall 2025.
