Course Overview
Building on several courses, this course explores the Lean Body of Knowledge in greater detail. Lean (or Just in Time (JIT)/Toyota Production System (TPS)) principles have been incorporated into today’s popular management philosophies aimed at achieving excellence. Students will learn to apply Lean tools to business process improvement.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Explain the principles of Lean.
- Describe how Lean affects a company’s competitive position.
- Describe process improvement tools used in the implementation of Lean strategies.
- Apply waste elimination methods to business processes.
- Discuss the benefits of inventory reduction in a Lean environment.
- Relate Lean and product quality.
- Analyze the application of pull systems to limit work-in-process (WIP) and queue times.
- Analyze the application of strategies to reduce lot sizes.
- Analyze visual workplace/management strategies to facilitate engagement.
- Apply the principles of the 5S approach to workplace organisation.
- Analyze the principles of Total Productive Maintenance.
- Describe strategies to involve people in the development and implementation of Lean.
- Describe strategies to effect improvement through supplier relationships and supply chain management.
- Relate Lean to MRP II and the Theory of Constraints.
- Identify key performance measures integral to Lean implementation.
- Assess the synergies and differences between Lean, TOC and Six Sigma
