Course Overview
This course focuses on applied healthcare product practice across both public-sector healthcare organizations and private-sector health technology companies. Learners develop the skills, frameworks, and judgment needed to implement and/or lead digital health products effectively in environments shaped by regulation, patient safety, clinical workflows, and complex stakeholder ecosystems. Core topics include operating in hybrid Product Manager/Product Owner roles; managing products across build, buy, and partner models; applying systems thinking to end-to-end clinical and operational workflows; integrating equity, usability, accessibility, and responsible design as core product responsibilities; and applying agile practices within healthcare-specific constraints. The course draws on realistic healthcare product scenarios from Canadian healthcare contexts and prepares learners for the realities of product leadership as it exists in healthcare today.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand healthcare product context: Explain how healthcare product management differs from general technology product management, including the roles of regulation, patient safety, clinical workflows, and ethical responsibility.
- Distinguish healthcare product roles: Differentiate the responsibilities of Product Managers and Product Owners in healthcare organizations across strategy, product thinking, and delivery execution.
- Translate healthcare needs into product decisions: Translate clinical, operational, and user needs into product decisions and roadmaps across internal products, vendor platforms (e.g., EMRs, CRMs), and enterprise systems.
- Analyze healthcare workflows and systems: Analyze healthcare workflows that span multiple digital systems and organizations, considering interoperability, integrations, and workflow impact.
- Evaluate risks and responsible product design: Evaluate usability, accessibility, equity, and ethical risks in healthcare digital products, including algorithmic bias, alert fatigue, and workflow misalignment.
- Apply agile delivery in healthcare environments: Apply agile product practices such as prioritization, backlog management, and iteration in healthcare product delivery across internal teams, vendors, and partners.
- Communicate product strategy and trade-offs: Communicate product vision, priorities, and trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders while managing competing constraints.
- Demonstrate healthcare product leadership: Develop and present product decisions for realistic healthcare scenarios, applying course concepts and reflecting on personal product practice.
