Course details

​This 6 week online self-paced, course is for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Midwives (RMs) who are seeking competencies for Contraceptive Management Certified Practice. Students will be provided with the minimum requirements for safe assessment, provision and management of Combined Hormonal Contraception (CHC) and Progestin only Hormonal Contraception. (POC). It is recommended that learners spend an average of 4 – 6 hours per week of study time. Students will become competent in the certified practice realm of Contraceptive Management (CM) as mandated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives Registered Nurses (BCCNM)). Registered Nurses: Upon completion of the course nurses will write an Exit Evaluation and if successful, will apply to be placed on the BCCNM Certified Practices Register and be eligible to use the certified practice designation. Registered Midwives: Upon completion of the course, midwives will write an Exit Evaluation and if successful, will apply to be placed on the BCCNM Specialized Skill Register. BCCNM/NNPBC-approved CM Decision Support Tools (DSTs) are supported by the World Health Organization & US CDC Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use. Learning Outcomes

As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of current relevant legislation that allows Certified Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives to provide contraception management.
  • Develop a comprehensive sexual health assessment framework with a primary focus on socio­economic determinants of health.
  • Apply the knowledge of reproductive health to the practice of contraceptive management.
  • Assess, analyze and refer clients with sexually transmitted infections to the appropriate Primary Health Care Provider.
  • Identify types of contraceptive methods including indications, contraindications and mechanism of action.
  • Analyze issues related to reproductive health and contraceptive management using systematic inquiry and critical reflection.
  • Provide sexual health promotion, counselling and client education through collaborative relationships with Certified Registered Nurses, Clinicians and Primary Health Care Providers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of administrative strategies for contraceptive management.
