Course Overview
In this course, students will examine a holistic model of care for the cancer patient that includes an integrated approach to healing and providing optimal outcomes for oncology patients. Students will develop care plans for patients based on the acute and long term effects of radiation therapy treatment whilst considering the patient's cultural, physical and emotional needs. Issues surrounding patient education, post-treatment quality of life, care in the community, palliative and hospice care will also be examined.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Describe the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach in the care of a cancer patient through diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment care.
- Analyze the role of radiation therapist as an integral member of care team for cancer patients.
- Evaluate the impact of radiation therapy within the process of symptom management.
- Assess acute and long term effects of treatment based on radiation dose, treatment technique, pathophysiology, adjuvant therapies and patient factors.
- Counsel the patient on appropriate care plans for the expected acute reactions and potential long term effects of radiation therapy while considering the patients physical, cultural, and emotional needs.
- Evaluate the role of complementary therapies in providing an integrated approach to cancer care.
- Recognize the need to provide on-going physical and psycho-emotional care during the treatment course.
- Examine the resources and services available in the community for oncology patient’s post-treatment care including homecare, hospice and palliative care.
- Analyze the issues surrounding caring for cancer patients.
