Course Overview
DSON 5012 Cardiac Sonography is a continuation of DSON 5011 Cardiac Sonography. The focus of the theory component of this course shifts to the etiology, hemodynamics, signs, and symptoms, and sonographic patterns as relevant to the interpretation and quantification of cardiac disease. The course includes modules on systolic and diastolic dysfunction, hypertension, valve disease, cardiomyopathy, diseases of the great vessels, infective endocarditis, cardiac masses, pericardial disease, heart failure, and systemic diseases.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the theory component of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the causes, hemodynamic consequences, and treatments for cardiac pathology.
- Describe the role of echocardiography in assessing cardiac pathology.
- Describe the impact on cardiac hemodynamics during provocative/dynamic maneuvers such as the Valsalva Maneuver. (3.3d)
- Correlate results from auscultation with cardiac pathologies. (5.2e)
- Describe the principles and interpretation of spectral Doppler, tissue Doppler, strain rate imaging and ultrasound contrast imaging in the setting of cardiac pathology. (Appendix E)
