On Monday, June 12th, over 100 alumni and partners attended the 38th Annual General Meeting of the BCIT Alumni Association held at the BCIT downtown campus.

We were delighted to welcome many new and returning alumni, friends and BCIT partners, including Jack Davidson, an alumnus and Chair, BCIT Board of Governors, and Kathy Kinloch, President, BCIT.

President Kinloch addressed the AGM audience, recognizing and applauding the meaningful and important contributions alumni make to the community, economy and the success of BCIT. She spoke eloquently and passionately about the vision for BCIT, providing a glimpse of the future of the Institute and the tangible ways BCIT is innovating and changing to keep pace with real-world needs and aspirations. It is an exciting time at BCIT and a journey we look forward to being part of over the coming years.

I was pleased to report on the Association's initiatives and accomplishments over the past year, which included a focus on strengthening governance, enhancing revenue streams and exploring new frontiers in engaging alumni. Our full report can be found in the Alumni Association Annual Report for 2016/17.

At the AGM we recognized departing board members. Iain Henderson served a full term as 1st Vice Chair of the Finance Committee and member of the Speaker Series Task force. Sara Turcotte served a full term with the Board, playing an instrumental role as Chair of the Governance Committee and member on Task Forces for the Past President's Council and BCIT Alumni Golf Tournament. Retiring from the board, and acknowledged for his leadership as past President was Brent Charleton. Thank you for your years of service and commitment.

During the AGM, Kristen Poskitt, Chair, Engagement Committee and Kiel Landrigan, 2nd Vice President, were re-elected to the Board. One new member, Alexandra Gunn, was elected to the Board as Director at Large.

We were also pleased to announce the appointment of Timothy David, Vice President, External for the BCIT Student Association for a one-year voting term, as the president's designate to represent the BCIT Student Association on the Alumni Association Board, taking over for Saf Dewji 2017 Student designate.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to keynote Speaker, BCIT alumna Megan Hanacek, Professional Registered Forester and Biologist. Megan shared her awe-inspiring success story of surviving 78 days, alone in the wilderness of Patagonia and spoke about the roots of her passion for environmental stewardship, embracing challenge and links back to her days as a student at BCIT.
