Course Overview
This course is designed to acquaint students with a more in-depth understanding of a diagnostic electrophysiology study. This includes the cardiac stimulation techniques used by EP labs to determine the mechanisms of various arrhythmias. The course addresses arrhythmia mechanisms, the basic diagnostic study, the EP study for VT and syncope, and EP studies for supraventricular arrhythmias including diagnostic pacing interventions to aid diagnosis of SVT and subsequent treatment of various arrhythmias with ablation therapy. Three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping will be introduced. Students will learn how this different mapping technologies have developed to support cardiac electrophysiology cases in labs performing complex ablations. Students will learn an overview of hardware and lab set-up, the application of cardiac CT anatomy and geometry creation and how these 3D geometries are used to create activation and voltage maps. We will demonstrate how these various maps are then utilized to target ablations of atrial and ventricular tachycardias.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe basic arrhythmia mechanisms.
- Discuss the principles of the diagnostic electrophysiologic study.
- Articulate the appropriate EP study protocol for supraventricular arrhythmias.
- Differentiate various VT aetiologies.
- Recognize the different mechanisms that cause syncope, their associated treatments, and the clinical tests used for diagnosing syncope.
- Explain entrainment and pace termination of arrhythmias.
- Describe the indications and results of His-Sync PVCs and Para-Hisian pacing.
- Describe the indications and results of Base versus Apex pacing.
- Identify the hardware components of the various 3D mapping systems, RF generators, and the EP recording systems.
- Differentiate the application of the two major 3D mapping system technologies: Impedance and magnetic-based systems.
- Describe CT merging techniques.
- Identify relevant structures on CT and geometry images, utilizing the knowledge of cardiac anatomy.
- Interpret the clinical significance of Voltage maps.
- Interpret the clinical significance of Local Activation Timing maps.
- Articulate how to make an accurate bipolar and activation map.
- Describe the clinical indications of Complex Fractionated Electrograms (CFE's).
- Assess the clinical utility of “Pace Maps".
