Course Overview
This hands-on course focuses on best practices to analyse, communicate and manage information with Microsoft Excel to support business and analytical decisions. COMP 2364 starts with navigating and customizing the MS Excel Ribbon interface, the Quick Access Toolbar and using task-specific contextual tabs. Students will engage with ranges, tables, styles, pivot tables, and What-If Analysis tools, via lectures, lab exercises, and assignments outside of class. Key topics covered include creating, editing, formatting, and saving a worksheet, sorting, filtering, slicers, applying formulae, functions, importing and exporting data. Additionally, students will consolidate data across multiple worksheets. COMP 2364 is a required course in the Applied Data Analytics Certificate (ADAC), the Data Visualization with MS PowerBI Microcredential, and an elective in the Applied Database Administration and Design (ADAD) Associate Certificate from Computing Flexible Learning. Upon completion, successful students will know how to master techniques and time saving shortcuts for the daily use as expert end-users of the latest version of MS Excel. Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use best practices to create, navigate, and manage MS Excel workbooks.
- Apply Cell Styles, Cell Alignment, Number formatting, and Font options.
- Describe how to enter, edit, format, sort, and filter MS Excel worksheet data.
- Use Relative, Absolute and Mixed cell references.
- Use MS Excel formulas and decision-making functions effectively.
- Audit and troubleshoot MS Excel formulas and functions.
- Create and format data visualizations with charts, including adding and customizing chart elements and styles.
- Explain the differences between tables and ranges in Excel and apply appropriate formatting and data management techniques using both.
- Demonstrate how to use built-in MS Excel Data Analysis Tools: Anova, Solver and Histograms.
- Use the Subtotal feature in Excel to group and summarize data—such as totals, averages, and counts.
- Create and modify MS Excel Pivot Tables and use to analyze data with Pivot Charts and Slicers.
- Perform data analysis tasks, including what-if analysis (Goal Seek, Scenario Manager and Variable Data Tables) and lookup functions.
- Describe MS Excel data modelling processes, and terminology.
- Use advanced logical functions and financial functions
- Analyze datasets and apply appropriate conditional formatting rules in MS Excel to support data interpretation and decision-making.
- Apply Data Tools including data validation rules, data consolidation, and remove duplicate to clean up data and ensure accuracy and consistency
- Import, transform, and export data using Excel's Get & Transform Data tools.
- Examine the features of workbook protection, including methods for securing individual cells and entire worksheets.
- Explore the fundamentals of Excel macros, including how they automate tasks and simplify repetitive actions.

This course may require an average total time commitment of 9-12+ hours per week. 3 hours of synchronous class time and 6-9+ hours per week for homework. Late registration is not permitted. BCIT Computing is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment. Students must provide their own current model Windows-compatible PC with microphone and video camera. Windows 10 or 11 and Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 is required in order to participate in this course successfully. i5 or higher equivalent processor, with 8 GB of RAM minimum, and 256 GB minimum storage.
