Course Overview
This course reviews and analyzes the precision aspects of survey equipment, including testing, calibration, and equipment operational procedures. It covers standards and specifications for horizontal and vertical control surveys (including precision GNSS surveys), accuracy analysis of measurement systems for survey observables, survey design and analysis, and three-dimensional coordinating systems in relation to industrial metrology. The course also includes deformation monitoring and analysis (geodetic and geotechnical techniques), as well as the analysis of tunnelling surveys for breakthrough errors. It ends with an introduction to precision alignment surveys. Students learn through a combination of lectures, lab assignments and projects.

- 50% in GEOM 6140
- Course registration is restricted to students with completion of 2-year Geomatics diploma.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Relate sources and types of errors to survey instruments and measurement techniques, including the associated error propagations and how to take care of the influence of the errors.
- Interpret accuracy standards and specifications as they relate to terrestrial, GNSS surveys and mapping.
- Translate standards and specifications (such as maximum allowable misclosures) into a choice of surveying equipment and field procedures for 1D, 2D or 3D positioning surveys.
- Design by pre-analysis (including computer simulation), the appropriate combination of survey techniques (traditional and GNSS), and equipment for field data collection to satisfy specific quality requirements (in 1D, 2D and 3D).
- Employ standard field techniques and procedures to data collection and calibration and testing of survey equipment.
- Evaluate (with consideration for human, instrumental, atmospheric conditions, ground stability, etc.) equipment-testing and calibration results to determine the accuracy, precision and limitations of the equipment.
- Analyze the positioning accuracy and suitability of measurement systems in industrial metrology.
- Explain some aspects of deformation monitoring techniques (geodetic and geotechnical) and analyses with consideration for systematic and random influences on measurement systems.
- Describe the techniques and instrumentations of precision alignment surveys (including conventional surveying and industrial metrology techniques, other).
- Discuss factors affecting accuracy in industrial metrology and how the effects are mitigated.
- Assess horizontal and vertical control networks for tunnelling surveys with consideration for breakthrough errors.
