Course Overview
Designed for new supervisors or those seeking a higher level of leadership responsibility. The purpose of this course is provide students the opportunity to gain a level of self-understanding of the field that will assist them in correctly identifying their own strengths and areas for improvement with respect to leadership, team, conflict-management and communication skills. Study will include the performance side of supervision as the areas of performance appraisal, training and development and motivation are explored. Through the use of interactive cases and structured experiences, students will increase their self-confidence and leadership abilities and establish a foundation for further training in supervision and management.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Understand the nature of supervision including the role of a supervisor and the competencies they are expected to possess and use.
- Learn the relationship between planning and controlling in organization, including the necessity to establish goals, set standards of performance and develop systematic methods to make certain organizational objectives are being accomplished as planned.
- Problem solving and decision making models will be examined and students will learn what tools are available to assist in the models, as well as what decision making styles are used, including their own.
- Appreciate (by experience) various management functions: planning, communications and change management.
- Understand their own motivation profile and leadership style as measured by commonly used testing instruments.
- Understand and appreciate group dynamics.
- Conduct marginal performance interviews.
- Communicate better, both orally and in report form.
- Understand the fundamentals of the case-study method.
- Be familiar with Provincial legislation as it relates to supervision in the workplace.
