Module 1 in this course outlines the basic structural components, connections, and structural layouts, as well as site installation for mass timber construction, including safety considerations when handling and lifting mass timber components. Module 2 focuses on the installation of building enclosures for mass timber construction. The building enclosure is a system of materials, components, and assemblies that physically separate conditioned space (interior) from unconditioned spaces (exterior). The long-term performance of the building enclosure relies on effective environmental control, which is a key factor in constructing a sustainable and durable mass timber building enclosure. Modules 3 and 4 give an introduction to fire protection and sound insulation performance for mass timber construction, respectively. In these modules, students will learn about the primary means to achieving fire safety in buildings, building features which affect sound insulation performance, and the difference between light-frame construction and mass timber construction in terms of fire and sound insulation performance. In Module 5, students will learn about the main phases and the roles and responsibilities in each construction phase which will give them a better appreciation of the effort and scope that goes into planning, managing and constructing a mass timber project. In addition to the course content, students will learn about performance of mass timber construction by reviewing several case studies.
This course is to be taken with XTMB 1001 - Mass Timber Construction: Intro to Products, Layouts, Cost Estimation and Digital Project Delivery, as part of the "Introductory Studies in Mass Timber Construction" Micro-Credential program. Explain commonly used strategies to address: moisture control, air control, vapour control, thermal control
Explain the building code requirements for environmental load control and energy efficiency for mass timbers.
Explain how climate zones impact energy performance requirements of a mass timber assembly, including thermal resistance and airtightness.
Explain how voluntary energy performance standards can be applied in mass timber construction and list examples of such standards.
Describe the key characteristics of typical mass timber building enclosure assemblies in terms of assembly layer installation, and enclosure continuity detailing.
Identify typical cladding attachment approaches used with exterior insulation on mass timber.
Describe the on-site moisture management considerations for mass timber assembly construction work.
Explain the difference between British Columbia Building Code and Fire Code as it relates to buildings under construction and post occupancy
Describe the primary means to achieving fire safety in buildings
Describe the difference between light-frame construction and mass timber construction in terms of fire performance.
Describe methods to achieve the fire resistance of mass timber construction.
Describe the basic concepts of building acoustics
Explain the acoustic requirements for sound insulation in the British Columbia Building Code.
Explain the differences between light frame construction and mass timber construction in terms of acoustic performance.
Explain how building code compliance can be achieved in mass timber construction
Identify primary building features which will affect the sound insulation performance for mass timber construction.
