Course Details

This course covers details on the development of maritime weather patterns and systems. The contents include atmosphere, atmospheric pressure, wind, cloud, precipitation, visibility, frontal systems, ocean currents, depressions and storms. Students will make weather observations from instruments, record and report on weather conditions.

  1. Required Textbook: Reeds Marine Meteorology by M. Cornish and E.Ives. Students may purchase the textbook at the BCIT Burnaby campus bookstore or online at An Environment Canada Manual (ECM) will be provided in class. Note: For the issuance of Transport Canada Training certificates by the school, a Transport Canada, Candidate Document Number (CDN#) will be required. Contact Transport Canada, Marine Safety for further information.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the composition of the earth's atmosphere and its physical properties.
  • Describe various cloud types and the conditions required for their formation.
  • Define different types of precipitation.
  • Explain fog, haze and mist and related visibility restrictions.
  • Describe the principles of basic meteorological instruments.
  • Use basic meteorological instruments.
  • Describe frontal systems and their weather.
  • Use ship code and decode book to record weather.
