The course covers those topics in technical mathematics which are important for success in BCIT Engineering and Health programs with Mathematics 12 as a prerequisite. Topics include algebraic operations, simple equations, ratios, basic geometry, quadratic equations, logarithms, graphs, linear equations and trigonometry. Meets Principles of Math 12 or Pre-Calculus 12 requirements for BCIT Engineering Technology, Health Science or Computer Systems Technology programs. This course is equivalent to MATH 0001 which is offered through Part-time Studies.

The student will use the four basic mathematical operations to solve problems involving whole numbers, fractional numbers, decimals, percent, powers, roots and the conversion of measurements.
The student will solve problems involving basic operations with signed numbers and will use the correct order of operations in calculations.
The student will perform basic algebraic operations by writing an algebraic expression for a verbal statement, evaluating the expression with numerical values and simplifying the expression by combining like terms.
The student will solve linear equations and will manipulate formulae (literal equations).
The student will identify types of angles and triangles and will solve problems by applying basic angle properties and the Pythagorean theorem.
The student will solve problems involving right angle triangles by using the definitions of the trigonometric ratios of an acute angle.
The student will determine the values of the trigonometric ratios of any angle and will solve problems involving oblique triangles by applying the Sine or Cosine laws.
The student will resolve a vector into rectangular components and find the resultant of the components as well as add vectors graphically by components or by application of the Sine or Cosine laws.
The student will convert between radians and degrees to solve problems involving the central angle, radius, arc length and sectional area of circles.
The student will determine the perimeter, area and volume of basic geometric shapes.
The student will define and evaluate a function, graph linear and quadratic functions, interpret graphs and solve linear equations graphically.
The student will find the slope of a line, be able to write the equation of a line given the slope and intercept of two points as well as find the distance between two points.
The student will write an algebraic equation from a statement and solve problems involving ratios, proportions and variations.
The student will solve problems involving two linear equations algebraically, with algebraic substitution and addition-subtraction. The student will also solve problems involving linear equations graphically and with determinants.
The student will simplify algebraic expressions by performing algebraic operations and factoring. The student will factor common monomial factors, the difference between two squares, the sum or difference between two cubes and trinomials.
The student will solve problems by identifying and solving quadratic equations graphically, by factoring or with the quadratic formula.
The student will solve equations with algebraic fractions by reducing the fractions to the simplest equivalent fractions in order to find the lowest common denominator.
The student will simplify algebraic expressions involving exponents, roots and radicals by using the laws of exponents, the basic rules for roots and radicals and the conversion of radicals to fractional exponents.
The student will convert between ordinary and scientific notation and perform arithmetic operations with scientific notation. The student will use the properties of logarithms to simplify and solve logarithmic and exponential expressions and equations.
The student will solve linear inequalities algebraically as well as graphically.
