Course Details

The course will examine the physical and psychological needs of people as they interact with their environment. Study will include physical comfort as well as indoor environmental controls as they relate to residential design. A continuation of topics introduced at the Certificate level, this course will provide an advanced understanding of materials typically utilized in residential interior design, particularly those used in the kitchen and bath. Emphasis will be placed on appropriate and sustainable material choices, indoor air quality, and Life Cycle Analysis. Materials will be researched, explored and analysed in terms of their suitability for design, installation and construction, maintenance and creating a healthy living environment.

Prerequisite(s)

65% in ALL INTD Certificate Courses and 70% in COMM 1120.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Assess the physical and psychological requirements of a client.
  • Apply best practices and sustainable principles to the selection of materials for a residential project.
  • Identify installation procedures recommended by the NKBA to achieve the expected levels of quality within time and budget.
  • Select and specify fabrics and finishes considering factors such as maintenance, durability, abrasion resistance, flammability, colourfastness and acoustical properties.
  • Identify environmental issues relating to interior design and possible products and methods of reducing environmental impacts.
  • Identify environmental factors that impact indoor air quality.
  • Discuss the advantages that environmentally responsible choices have on budget considerations for a kitchen or bath project.
  • Prepare finish specifications and schedules for a residential project.
