INTD 2300 - Residential Studio A

Interior Design Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

Course Details

This studio course is the first building block of space planning and introduces students to the methodology used by interior designers to conceptualize, analyze, and develop workable solutions to residential applications. Students will analyze existing floor plans, study furniture placement, construct a model, develop layouts for kitchens and bathrooms, document their research findings and design development in a sketchbook journal. Students will implement their own concepts and ideas in the planning of a small residential project with the option to use their freehand skills or AutoCAD as drawing tools in their final submission.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze what makes a plan work: zoning, circulation, adjacencies, and appropriate use of space.
  • Incorporate the elements and principles of design to design solutions.
  • Apply proxemics to design solutions.
  • Prepare bubble diagrams and block plans as a precursor to planning a space.
  • Plan typical residential room layouts, including kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Plan furniture layouts for social, private, and work areas in residential applications.
  • Build a model of a small residential space, to develop the ability to see space three-dimensionally.
  • Implement solutions for small residential interiors, including a written concept statement.
  • Develop a sketchbook/journal showing research, concept, and design development & implementation.
  • Clearly communicate design intent through 2-D drawings.
