Course details
This course surveys the historically significant furnishings, decorative arts and interiors from antiquity to the present day, focusing primarily on Western Civilization. Key stylistic periods of architecture and furniture will be examined within the historical parameters of society, culture, economy, and technology. Presentations, discussions, and projects (team and individual) will familiarize students with the key stylistic periods as they are applied to furnishings, decorative arts and interiors.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the similarities/differences of the components (motifs, colours, materials, etc.) of the key stylistic periods of architecture and furniture as they are applied to furnishings, decorative arts and interiors.
- Recognize the historical, sociocultural, and economic drivers that influenced the stylistic development of the concepts and components of furnishings, decorative arts and interiors.
- Identify the components of furniture.
- Apply knowledge of the elements and principles of design to differentiate between the key stylistic periods of architecture and furniture.
- Identify iconic examples of furnishings, decorative arts and interiors.
- Apply knowledge of the identifying characteristics of a key stylistic period to a residential project.
