Entrance Requirements

Four of 5 courses (MZEB 1110, MZEB 1120, MZEB 2110, and MZEB 2120) in this microcredential are open to learners across the workforce and suited to those seeking to develop competencies needed for residential heat pump system design, assessment/inspection, and installation planning.

The final course in the microcredential, MZEB 3110, focuses on heat pump installation and commissioning trade skills. Because this course builds on existing trade competencies, enrollment in this course is only open to learners who:

  1. are a journeyperson or final-level apprentice in plumbing, pipefitting/steamfitting, gasfitting, sheet metal, or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic trades
  2. hold a valid ODP/ODS Certification (required for the purchasing and/or handling of refrigerants throughout Canada), and a certificate number for refrigerant handling as required under current BC regulations.  This can be obtained by completing BCIT’s HVAC 0145 or HRAI’s ODP/ODS Course

To complete the full Microcredential, you must be a journeyperson or final-level apprentice in Plumbing, Pipefitting/Steamfitting, Gasfitting, Sheetmetal, or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic trades.

BCIT will recognize prior learning (e.g. equivalent courses from TECA or HRAI) to allow entry to more advanced courses.

  • Experience as a mechanical contractor, designer, or tradesperson in the residential sector is strongly recommended.
