International fees are typically three times the amount of domestic fees. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.

Course details

Information is not read the same way online as in print. This course teaches students how to express ideas on the Web, how to anticipate the needs of the reader and how to organize and structure information so that it is quickly grasped and navigable, achieving the purpose for which it was developed. NOTE: Students do not need to submit transcripts for entrance to this course. BUT, in the case of formal or informal grade appeals or reviews they will be asked to show proof of their English requirements. Students who wish to confirm their English level are strongly advised to take COMM 0015.

Prerequisite(s)

  • Before taking this course, students must have completed their technical elective (COMP 1850 or COMP 2010 or COMP 2369). Students must also have one of the following English requirements, as well as intermediate word processing skills in the latest version of MS Word for Windows: English Studies 12 "67%" (C+) or equivalent (ie: COMM 0015 "70+")

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the differences in the way readers use and read Websites and printed documents.
  • Chunk information using direct structure to limit page depth without fragmenting information.
  • Create navigation designs based on logical information architectures.
  • Anticipate and focus on the information needs of the visitor and the proponent.
  • Write sentences and paragraphs appropriate to the Web.
  • Create a clear heading structure and links that support intuitive visitor browsing.
  • Write content suitable for search engines.
