Course Overview
This course provides a foundation of study in theory and practice of quality management in healthcare through critical analysis of literature, case studies, and health policy resources. Students will apply current and relevant quality management theory to the cancer care environment. There will be examination of both existing health policy and emerging issues in the Canadian healthcare system. This course will also examine quality assurance processes related to risk management, best practices, and accreditation. Learners will participate in Interprofessional Education (IPE) through online modules and discussions in the accompanying course, HSIP 0400.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Identify the main principles of Total Quality Management (TQM).
- Justify the need for total quality management in healthcare.
- Apply the principles of Total Quality Management to the cancer treatment health care environment.
- Examine the relationship between quality improvement implementation and health care facilities as unique organizations in structure and culture.
- Evaluate resource utilization and processes for continuous quality improvement within current constraints of the health care system.
- Assess the problems and issues in implementing quality improvements efforts within a health care organization.
- Understand the challenges that exist when managing change within the evolving healthcare system.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the current and emerging issues in the Canadian health care system.
- Examine the relationship between health policy and change in the healthcare system.
- Examine quality management factors that can affect patient safety.
- Recognize the relationship between practice decisions and healthcare budgets.
- Examine the principles of evidence-based decision-making, accreditation, risk management and best practices.
- Apply the principles of risk management in support of best practices.
