Course Overview
Focuses on the role of the media in society from practical and theoretical perspectives. The course begins with the notion that what we read, watch and hear in the media plays an important role in how we construct meaning. Learners will discuss several media issues and will be especially encouraged to actively read, listen and view the news media in order to discuss ongoing issues.
Prerequisite(s)
- BCIT ENGL 1177, or 6 credits BCIT Communication at 1100-level or above, or 3 credits of a university/college first-year social science or humanities course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Discuss relative strengths and weaknesses of the news media in communication.
- Identify prominent contributors to communication theory and analyse their work.
- Critically examine content in the electronic and print media.
- Identify current issues in Canadian media.
- Evaluate issues in Canadian private and public broadcasting.
- Assess the role of media regulation in Canada.
- Identify Chomsky's 'propaganda model' and Hall's notion of 'representation'.
- Discuss the use of signification in media.
- Analyse the use of the news media by the public relations industry.
