Course Overview
This course provides students with a fundamental knowledge of the basic components of television production and how they interrelate. BCST 1120 will provide students with a working knowledge of professional broadcast equipment such as cameras, switchers, microphones, audio mixers, and media servers, developed through a combination of lectures and practical exercises. Students will be able to operate portable, studio, and control-room production equipment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Explain the basic components of a television production and how each inter-relates with the other components.
- Set up, troubleshoot, and operate professional video cameras independently within a given amount of time.
- Use professional video cameras independently to capture technically accurate images according to composition guidelines and record multi-channel audio.
- Apply elements and principles of art to compose visuals that effectively communicate a specific meaning and tell a pre-determined story to a defined audience.
- Explain the aesthetic concept of sequencing images to create a sense of continuous action for the viewer.
- Independently create video sequences that generate aesthetically pleasing, continuous actions on screen for the viewer.
- Export a finished edit to correct industry-standard expectations.
- Set up a basic lighting kit to accomplish standard three-point interview lighting in a given amount of time.
- Independently apply technical and aesthetic principles to tell a simple story using video and audio.
- Explain the various roles involved in a live-to-tape studio production.
- Set up and operate, under direct supervision, all the equipment in a television studio environment.
- Perform, under direct guidance, each of the various roles involved in a live-to-tape studio production.
