Course details

In this course, students help an industry client address a sustainable business challenge or advance a sustainable business innovation. This course is the first of a two-part capstone experience that continues with BSUS 5300. During this course, students work in teams to develop a Terms of Reference (TOR) in consultation with their client. Students complete secondary research to inform project background and scope, design project methodology drawing from applied consulting methods, and practice professional consulting skills through regular client interaction.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills by establishing work plans and priorities, setting realistic expectations, and completing objectives within a team environment.
  • Develop a Team Charter to guide teamwork.
  • Develop a project work plan with estimated time requirements; implement the work plan and manage activities to stay on schedule.
  • Develop and implement an effective method of ongoing communications (including meetings) with teammates and client.
  • Schedule and run meetings effectively and professionally.
  • Develop a Terms of Reference agreed to by project partners.
  • Conduct relevant secondary research, drawing on scientific, technical, and policy literature and employing appropriate critical analysis and assessment.
  • Select primary research tools and design primary research workflow to address a specific sustainable business problem within the boundaries of defined scope and available resources.
