Course Overview
This course provides a general review of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) history, its components, associated radio signals, and satellite positioning concepts, including errors and biases involved and how to best minimize them. It also discusses various GNSS operation modes, data-processing procedures, and techniques. Through a series of lectures and assignments the course will expand to other major topics such as high-precision GNSS positioning, intermixing various GNSS antenna types, and utilizing high precision GNSS data products including precise clock and orbit. Other key topics include radio signal corrections, GNSS datums, reference frames, and coordinate transformations. The chapter on network adjustment will analyze adjustments using satellite-based baseline data and different reference station networks in North America. Finally, satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) and GNSS applications will be studied.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the basic elements of satellite positioning, including some of the common terms.
- Describe different segments of any GNSS in general and GPS in particular.
- Relate GNSS measurement concepts and positioning services.
- Outline GPS signal structure, its modernization plan, and GNSS receiver parts.
- Discuss GNSS errors and biases and how to cancel and/or mitigate them in different applications.
- Differentiate positioning modes and their applications.
- Outline and relate available satellite data, correction, and processing services.
- Perform GNSS data-processing procedure, including precise point positioning (PPP).
- Apply coordinate transformations between GNSS, map, and ground systems.
- Relate topics on high-precision GNSS positioning, including inter-mixing different GNSS antenna types, data formats, and precise clock and ephemeris.
- Differentiate GNSS datums (horizontal and vertical) and reference frames.
- Distinguish different GNSS reference station networks in North America.
- Explain satellite-based augmented systems (SBAS).
- Perform GNSS network design and adjustments.
- Differentiate types of GNSS differencing techniques, including phase approach; single, double and triple difference techniques; and different types of wavelength combinations.
- Discuss other major available satellite positioning systems besides GPS.
- Perform high-precision data collection, processing, and results evaluation.
