Course Overview
This course provides participants with the information needed to assess and manage areas in and adjacent to riparian areas. An introduction to riparian assessment and restoration techniques is provided to expand discussion on management practices and options in riparian areas. Major course topics included classification of streams, lakes and wetlands, requirements for establishing riparian area boundaries, meeting riparian objectives for management areas, riparian assessment methodology and silvicultural practices that speed recovery of fish, water quality and channel stability.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe sustainable resource management issues related to riparian area management.
- Classify streams, lakes and wetlands using existing information and field collected data.
- Evaluate and report the condition of a riparian vegetation community by completing a vegetation plot.
- Assess the range of options available for managing riparian areas through consideration of Best Management Practices, legislated requirements and recommended strategies from various jurisdictions.
- Evaluate and prescribe restoration techniques for managing riparian areas.
- Determine the appropriate riparian silvicultural strategies needed to speed ecological restoration of a forest stand and achieve a desired future condition.
