Course Overview
Students will be introduced to the types and uses of maps, satellite imagery, orthophotos, and air photos used in BC for sustainable resource management. The course emphasizes skills required to use these sources to help plan routes and field activities while still in the office, and to help successfully navigate to field locations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain how maps, aerial photographs, and imagery produced at various scales can be used to plan activities.
- Describe what types of information can be found on common BC contour, thematic, planimetric and cadastral maps, and how that information can be applied to work in resource management.
- Obtain maps and aerials photographs using existing indexing systems.
- List and describe the basic characteristics of map projections and map datums frequently used in BC resource mapping.
- Define map locations using various coordinate systems.
- Define the direction of the three norths on a map, and explain their use for field activities.
- Describe what is meant by geoid height, ellipsoid height, and topographic height, and how they are used to determine height about mean sea level.
- Estimate distances, directions and areas from maps or aerial photos.
- Find slopes on a topographic map.
- Delineate watersheds using contour maps and aerial photographs.
- Identify linear features such as roads and streams on aerial photographs.
- Recognize common land use patterns on aerial photographs.
- Delineate general vegetation types.
- Find locations on the ground using land use patterns, topographic features, general vegetation patterns, and linear features shown on maps and aerial photos.
