Course Overview
This course aims to introduce students to theoretical and applied aspects of lower extremity prosthetic and orthotic management (at the knee and above). Theoretical and practical components of the course run in parallel throughout the semester. During the practical sessions the students’ examines design, construction and fit of knee orthoses, knee ankle foot orthoses and transfemoral prostheses. Volunteer patients are assessed and fitted for a variety of these devices.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Make appropriate prosthetic and orthotic treatment plans based on subjective and objective information (including patient history, patient physical assessment, gait analysis and patient goals). Be able to justify (verbal) treatment plans and expected outcome measures.
- Discuss fitting procedures for KAFO and KO.
- Fabricate, fit, evaluate and align the following lower extremity devices:
- Prosthetic check sockets for a transfemoral amputee using conventional methods,
- Endoskeletal trans-femoral prosthesis – Quad socket,
- Endoskeletal trans-femoral prosthesis - Ischial containment socket,
- Thermoplastic KAFO to patient model.
