Course Overview
This course will prepare you with the basic knowledge needed in medical office administration and procedures, and professional conduct. You will develop skills in appointment scheduling, reception and communication, filing, referrals, and pharmacology. You will learn how to order inventory and supplies used in a medical office. There will be a review of issues related to patient rights. You will be introduced to medical abbreviations and to using resources such as the BC medical directory. You will also be introduced to medical services [E-Comm (911), non-emergency health advice (811), and (711)] and medical authorities [Regional Health Authorities, First Nations Health Authority, Provincial Health Services Authority, sub-agencies]. Through office scenarios, you will apply problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and conflict resolution skills. Role playing will help you develop the confidence needed for dealing with concerns relating to the duties of a medical office assistant.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate effective communication and reception skills.
- Describe E-Comm (911), non-emergency health advice (811), and (711) services.
- Describe the roles of the health authorities.
- Incorporate ethical decision making in performing duties.
- Describe professional conduct, ethical standards and codes of practice specific to medical office assistants (e.g. Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Medical Office Assistants, 1998).
- Communicate professionally with health-care professionals and patients.
- Apply critical thinking, problem-solving techniques and conflict resolution strategies to resolve patient concerns and complaints.
- Schedule appointments efficiently.
- State the steps needed to refer a patient to a specialist.
- Accurately document and maintain medical records.
- Competently prepare and file charts in alphabetical order.
- Order inventory and supplies used in a medical office.
- Define commonly used abbreviations in the medical field and properly use those abbreviations within patient health records.
- Name the major drug classifications and their effects on patients and name commonly used medications.
- State the differences between controlled prescriptions and regular prescriptions.
- Describe the role of pharmaceutical representatives in a medical environment.
- Explain the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Describe key elements of privacy regulations (e.g. Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act [PIPEDA], Personal Health Information Protection Act [PHIPA]) and their application in a medical office.
- Describe the procedures for releasing information.
- Describe the community resources and associated medical organizations available to health professionals and patients.

- Registration is restricted to students accepted into the Medical Office Assistant program. This course is delivered live and online via Microsoft Teams at set times each week. You will need a computer with a webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection to participate in class. Contact sobm-moa@bcit.ca for questions related to this course or programs.
