Course Overview
Students will learn the basics of first aid, rescue equipment, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within the context of marine environments. Topics include responding to emergencies; dealing with shock, unconsciousness, and choking; treating wounds and fractures; performing artificial respiration; and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to respond to sudden cardiac arrest.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate and explain emergency scene management in relation to a responsive and unresponsive casualty.
- Describe how to deal with shock, unconsciousness, and fainting in a casualty.
- Demonstrate and explain the first aid procedures for a conscious choking adult, choking adult who becomes unconscious, choking adult who is pregnant or larger than the rescuer, choking adult found unconscious, and self-administered abdominal thrusts.
- Demonstrate and explain the procedures for performing artificial respiration on an adult, child, and infant using a jaw thrust with and without head tilt.
- Demonstrate and explain cardiovascular emergencies on an adult (1-Rescuer CPR, and 2-Rescuer CPR).
- Explain and demonstrate how to use an automated external defibrillator.
- Discuss different potential medical conditions.
- Describe rescue equipment.
- Demonstrate how to make narrow and broad bandages.
- Demonstrate and explain how to control severe bleeding on a casualty.
